Current teaching and research interests

(Lara) Michal Skarf, MD, is Chief of the Section of Palliative Care at the VA Boston Healthcare System. She is Associate Fellowship Director for the BIDMC-VA Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship. In her role at the VA she oversees clinical and educational initiatives related to palliative care including a 15-bed hospice and palliative care unit, ambulatory care and inpatient consults. Her focus is on integrating palliative care into diverse care settings. She served as a coach for the VA Palliative Care-ICU Initiative in 2014. She established an integrated pulmonary-palliative care clinic that serves patients with advanced COPD. She is also the Veteran Integrated Network 1 Life Sustaining Treatment Decisions Initiative Lead and a Goals of Care Trainer. She enjoys many forms of teaching, working with fellows and interacting with patients and their families.
