Current teaching and research interests

Todd Rinehart, LICSW, ACHP-SW is the Social Work Director, with the MGH Division of Palliative Care and Geriatric Medicine and recognized as an Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Social Worker.   His interest in end of life care began as a volunteer with the Gay Men’s Health Crisis in NYC during the height of the AIDS epidemic.  That experience changed the direction of his life and led him to earning his Master of Social Work degree at New York University.  Since graduating in 2000 he has spent his social work career working in HIV/AIDS, hospice and palliative care.

Todd has been a member of the Harvard Medical School Center for Palliative Care faculty since 2008.  He also serves on the faculty of the Harvard Palliative Care Fellowship Program.  Todd is a clinical supervisor for the MGH Social Service Department Internship Program and a board member with the MGH Clinical Recognition Program.  Todd is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, Social Work Hospice and Palliative Care Network and the Association for Death Education and Counseling.

Besides his directorship and clinical responsibilities, Todd serves as the Bereavement Coordinator for the Palliative Care Service; offering one-on-one and group supportive services to those impacted by the death of a loved one.   He volunteers as a counselor for Comfort Zone Camp, a bereavement camp for children who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or guardian, and established a partnership between MGH and CZC offering a one-day bereavement program for children and their families.
